Can I check in gift wrapped items with my baggage?

I will be traveling on the third week of February to visit some relatives. They informed me that they will be asking me to take back some gifts that were already gift-wrapped that they intend to give to their friends back home. They were going to use the post but since I will be visiting, they figured it would be cheaper if I would just bring them home since I always travel light and there’s no chance that I’d be exceeding my baggage limit.

My question is that can I check in these gift-wrapped items or would the airport security still open them even if they have passed through the xray machines? I’ll probably advise them to just remove the wrapping but they are already wrapped and I was just wondering in case this is possible so that they won’t have to unwrap them and all. The place I’ll be visiting is Hong Kong. I couldn’t find anything on their website about gift-wrapped items, only a list of items not allowed in the airport and gift-wrapped items are not part of their list.
